Exclusive interview
I: Stella, it's great to finally sit down and have a chat with you. First things first, how are you feeling about the new album? S: Excited. So excited! I just can't wait to finally share what I've been working on for so long with all my fans. I: Well, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we can't wait to hear it. Tell me, what was the thought process behind the album name? S: I mean obviously 'Constellations' is a bit of a play on my name, but I think in a general sense I've always been fascinated by the concept of space. It's so vast and such a mystery to so many people, which in a way reflects where I am artistically with this album. I: I see. So, what exactly can we expect from this new era of yours? S: Expect the unexpected. This entire project is like nothing I've ever done before which is what makes it so exciting. I mean, I absolutely love 'Summer's End' for what it was at the time, but I feel like I was definitely playing it a bit safe, which completely makes sense for a first album. I think taking the time to really craft my own sound has paid off massively, and I'd like to hope the record reflects this. I: Well 'making the bed' is an amazing song, which bodes well for the rest of the album. What was the inspiration behind writing that song? S: 'Making the bed' is so special to me, it's actually the first song I wrote for this album specifically. I wrote it at a pretty rough point, when I had a lot going on in my personal life but still felt like I had to keep up a certain appearance to everyone around me. When you're struggling, those everyday tasks which seem so easy - like making your bed - suddenly become really difficult because of everything else happening. I also toyed with that common phrase 'you made your bed, now lie in it' , because sometimes when you're going through things alone you start to blame yourself, even if its' completely irrational. I: Definitely. Is there anything you want your fans to take away from the song? S: Just that it's okay to tell people how you're feeling, and you don't have to deal with everything by yourself. This was something I tried to reflect in the music video, that idea of being physically surrounded by people yet still feeling alone. I: What was that like, the process of making the video for such a vulnerable song? S: It was honestly really enjoyable. I think because the song is so personal to me, I wanted the video to reflect that, and so we actually shot a lot of the video in my own bedroom. That was really nice, it meant I didn't have much travelling to do to get to set each day! I: I love that idea, it's so unique. I have a final question from your fans I've seen circulating online - which song are you most looking forward to playing on tour? S: Oooh, okay how do I answer this without giving away what the song sounds like? I can't wait to play 'Shooting star' live, it's such a fun, energetic one which I hope the fans will love as much as I do I: Sounds amazing - I'll definitely be there to hear it! 'Making the bed', Stella's latest single, is out now. Presave Constellations, out February 13th.
